Maio is an idyllic, relaxing and peaceful island with white and sandy beaches which are lined with palm trees. The island itself is extremely flat and perfect for those who want to spend some lazy days in the sun. There are even turtles coming to the magnificent beaches to lay their eggs. Those who want a bit more excitement can visit the capital Vila do Maio, which is a small town in which a traditional church can be found. Once in the area you could also visit the nearby peaceful and tranquil village of Morro.
The best and easiest way of exploring the island, the numerous romantic beaches and the traditional villages is to hire a car, but do not expect to find lively cities, as the island has a population of only 6.000 people. Instead you will find friendly locals who prefer to live a quiet life and a scenery so breathtaking, you can understand the unhurried pace and tranquillity for which Maio is famous for.
